Food & Cuisine in Pune

The famed arbi leaves steamed and sautéed in a fiery and sweet masala (alu chi vadi), jaggery and dal stuffed paratha (puran poli), and masala dal (aamti) are preferred Maharashtrian delicacies. The nutritious pithla bhakri, thali pith, matki ki usal and varan bhat are very popular among the locals and visitors.

Mangoes

Mangoes come aplenty in an eclectic assortment of recipes, colours and flavours. A riot of colour assaults Pune during the summer as mangoes, lush and ripe in vibrant orange, green and pink, flood the city. Alphonsoes are predominantly available in May. From the summer to the monsoon months other juicy types of mangoes are available. Maharashtrians enjoy the delicious amras for dessert. This showstopper is prepared using fresh mango pulp. Nonetheless, the rest of the year you can savour other mango delicacies including mango yogurt (amrakhand), mango barfi, aam papada and mango poli.

The Legendary Kayani Bakery

Among the country’s top bakeries is the Kayani Bakery. They have an assortment of biscuits like Ginger and Brazil Nut, but their fame is due to the Shrewsberry flavour. These biscuits are baked in two batches daily, at dawn and late in the afternoon. They are sold out instantly. Evidence of the biscuits’ quality is clearly indicated in the long queues lining up to the bakery in the wee hours before dawn.
